This starts off as the classic “they were best friends as kids they’re going to fall in love as adults” story, and if you didn’t know anything about standard story structure in Zelda this would be the conclusion you would draw at the beginning. Then we’re suddenly smacked with the reality that he ages and she doesn’t, followed quickly thereafter by her having to live in an alternate dimension because she’s the Sage of Forest, followed by her realization that the happy days of their childhood were over and that they had to be grown ups now. This shit was my very first (and one of my few that I’ve ever had) otp and consequently the first time I had my heart shattered into a thousand pieces by a coy storytelling bait-and-switch. WHY COULDN’T SHE JUST BE ABLE TO GROW UP AND NOT BE A SAGE AND LINK AND SARIA WOULD BE HAPPY TOGETHER AND fuck it, I’ll never sleep tonight if I get started on this.
